Mission
I am driven by my passionate beliefs in passion, knowledge, and family. I pursue these passions by utilizing my core strengths of Achiever, Input, and Focus. I plan to live out these values through opportunities where I am learning and solving to achieve excellence and leadership that impacts children and the under represented. To do so, I will seek opportunities to improve the process and make organizational changes. When I face challenges or obstacles along the way, I will remember to make connections with other and stay flexible.
Reflection
Nearly all of my life, I have wanted to become a pediatrician. I always had a soft spot for kids as I spent my days babysitting, tutoring, and being around kids. When I was ten, my little brother was born, and I watched him grow up. I loved the curiosity and innocence, kids display because it reminded me of bright days. However, not everything was just sunshine, as I witnessed my little brother suffer from malnutrition, it kicked off a passion within me to help children, particularly through healthcare. Coming to college, is the first real step to fulfilling this passion and going down the long pathway that is ahead of me.
However, college is hard. The world expands, and you encounter so many people that are way smarter than you. You’re truly independent for the first time and you are in charge of your own schedule. No one to remind you of your responsibilities and no one holding your hand. It is truly up to me to see if I thrive or sink in the real world. All of this can make you feel as if you’re alone and that it’s just you against the world. We also need to keep reminding ourselves that we are not alone. You will always have your family’s support and you can make friends that are like-minded people. So, I know I’m going to struggle, I know I’m going to have a hard time, but I just need to remind myself of the connections and relationships I have formed, and that failure does not mean the end. Failure is just another try at success. Success can only be defined by us, no one can tell you what your success looks to you as learned from the parable of the happy fisherman. I will use my strengths of Achiever, Input, and Focus to keep working hard and to keep trying.
There are resources available to me that I can utilize to help me be the best me I can be. My current goals are to increase my knowledge in multiple categories and to become more involved on campus. In order to do this, I can go into research and try to utilize the RaMP program offered through the University Honors Program and go in depth into new topics. I will remain open-minded to new topics, so I can continue learning and gaining knowledge. To do so, I will join more extracurriculars that do not relate to my major, which also satisfies my goal of becoming more involved on campus. I will pursue new environments of learning and becoming a more globalized citizen by pursuing diverse honors experiences during my time here at university.
As I continue on my journey through college, I also want to grow as a human being. I want to embrace what it really means to be a human. I want to interact with the world in different perspectives and become more aware of the world. I have already developed an interest in social justice, providing healthcare to people who cannot access it. I want to improve the healthcare system so that no one slips through the cracks so that everyone can get the healthcare that they deserve. I want to be a voice for the ones that do not have a voice. I want to be a spearhead and a leader for the underrepresented so that they can also embrace their true potential and not be inhibited by things that should be given. I want to bring awareness so that the privileged can use the opportunities they have to help others like in the privilege walk.
Becoming a pediatrician is incredibly difficult. It is a minimum of 10 years that will be difficult and at some points, it will be incredibly tempting to just quit and stop what I’m doing. When I approach these hurdles, I need to remember my values and the things that I believe in. I need to be aware that I am not alone and that there are resources for me to use. There are people willing to help. There are resources such as the PPAC to help me keep to the path and keep going. I will use these resources, so I can be aware ahead of time what’s up on the road, so I can prepare myself for these challenges. This is my plan to become the best me that I can be me.
